How to choose a data collector & field software
Software first, hardware second
The field software determines what you can do; the handheld only determines how comfortably you do it. Evaluate the software with your own workflow before looking at the device.
Screen readability
A screen you cannot read at midday costs more time than any processor. This is the specification that matters most in Kerala's light conditions.
Instrument compatibility
Confirm the controller drives your specific instrument models, not just the brand. Partial support is common and shows up only in the field.
Open export formats
LandXML and DXF export keep you free. A controller that only writes a proprietary format ties your office software choice to your instrument choice forever.
What it costs

Can I use a phone or tablet instead of a data collector?

What file formats should survey data export in?
